Let The Peaches Begin

by Staff on July 11, 2014

Charlottesville Peach SeasonYes.  Next up for harvest in Central VA is the state’s peach crop.  Though the maturation of our peach crop was delayed somewhat by our extremely harsh winter, the peach crop in VA is abundant and healthy and ready to eat.  We have an unexpected flavor bonus as well because moderately dry conditions this spring/summer have brought out the peak sweetness in this year’s crop.     Peaches should be available at local markets from now into September.

According to the 2012 Census of Agriculture, there were 244 peach farms in VA on approximately 1375 acres.   Peaches are not only delicious… in 2012 farmers harvested 6500 tons of peaches that were worth almost $6 million to Virginia farmers and agriculture.
